Time For Priorities

Time For Priorities
We’re all busier than ever, and especially when you are raising children, there just never seems to be enough time. However, as a mom, I want to stress how important it is to have time alone with God, time for your husband (apart from your children) and time to serve others.

Many days I would sit in a rocker soothing one of my babies while I listened to a Bible teaching on tape, meditated on scripture, or prayed in the spirit over my husband’s work, our children’s lives, or a friend in need.

I developed quite an intercessory prayer life at home while washing dishes, cleaning up messes and even mowing grass when Gary had to be away for business.  Other times I counseled friends on the phone or shared God’s encouragement with a relative.  If I got crabby or in a state of self-pity, I could always tell that I was not investing enough time in prayer, the Word of God or reaching out to others and I would have to make an adjustment.

There were challenges in the old 1800’s farmhouse we used to call home that would sometimes test every bit of patience, long-suffering, and pride I had (the last being a flaw God wanted to work on).  I learned to tell my husband, with no hints, but straight-forward communication, “I need a break from this place.  Please take me anywhere, but I need to get away.”

We would go to the park and swing or eat ice cream or share a meal (literally split it to save money!).  I tried to let my children know that although they were wonderful and I loved them dearly, their father and our marriage together was my highest priority next to my love for God.

Keeping priorities is so important, and no matter the demands of motherhood or working a job or whatever it is that takes up your time, fight to keep God first and your husband second. In the end, you will have a richer life because you chose the things of greatest value.
